In this era of globalization, liberalization and privatization, vested interests and competition have gained priority over social sensitivity, responsibility and inclusive growth. The political spaces for youth to address social, economic, and political issues have shrunk, consequently leading to the de-politicization of youth who live in a society where the caste, class, and gender divides are deepening day by day. NCAS, with its expertise in people-centred advocacy, has taken it on itself to build the perspective and enhance the capacities of young people to understand society in its complexities, look at development from the lens of the marginalized, and use advocacy to initiate social change. The Advocacy Internship Programme at NCAS is demonstrative of NCAS’ paradigmatic objective: to train and educate future social justice advocates on advocacy strategies and human rights related issues.
Divided into two phases, the Advocacy Internship Programme involves both coursework and fieldwork components. The first phase is held at the NCAS office in Pune, where interns receive inputs, both from NCAS staff as well as from outside professionals and activists, concerning the sociopolitical challenges of contemporary India. Confronting issues such as caste, class, and ethnicity, interns learn about the vast and varied social character of India and its effect on local and regional politics. Additionally, interns study various social movements and analyze political theory, applying theoretical concepts to practical, everyday challenges in India. This phase is about building people centred perspective and enhancing interns understanding of vaious socio-political theories and reasoning skills.
The second component of the Advocacy Internship Programme consists of a three-month placement with a human rights organization in India. This placement provides interns with an opportunity to both learn about social change on the ground, as well as develop professional, first-hand experience with a grassroots organization. The internship programme culminates with a final project that each intern is required to complete prior to finishing the program. This capstone project can come in the form of a research paper, film, drama, or any other medium that best suits the intern’s interest. Through the Advocacy Internship Program, NCAS works to train young advocates with the needed strategies and skills to serve as agents of social change.
