On October 15th, 2010, the latest group of interns arrived in Pune to start NCAS’ 15-month Advocacy Internship Programme. The Advocacy Internship Programme at NCAS is designed to provide young Indians with an opportunity to engage social justice initiatives and expand their understanding of the social and political climate in India. The program consists of two phases. The first phase involves an 11-month curriculum held at the NCAS office. Together, the interns study the sociopolitical challenges of contemporary India, as led by the NCAS staff, outside professionals, as well as from each other. The second component of the program involves placement with an Indian NGO, where the interns are able to complete 3 months of fieldwork with organizations throughout India.

The newest batch of interns come from a variety of diverse backgrounds, with each person possessing many notable talents and traits. The first project completed by the new batch of interns was a dance concerning issues of social justice. With the help of NCAS staff, the students choreographed and performed a dance confronting issues of unity and diversity. The interns will now undergo courses concerning class, caste, race, and ethnicity in order to expand their understanding of the sociocultural character of India.
The subjects that the interns address during the Advocacy Internship Programme include: concepts and practices of advocacy, policy analysis, and contemporary human rights advocacy. Interns culminate their study with a final project on an issue of their choice. These projects come in the form of papers, plays, films, or any other medium that meets the interns’ interests. The programme is designed to challenge the interns and facilitate a future of social justice advocacy. |
