The book is a compilation of a series of papers under an action research study
examining the linkages between Globalisation, Governance and Grassroots (GGG).
This study was initiated by NCAS to develop a concrete and nuanced understanding of
globalisation, the associated processes and its linkages to governance and grassroots
realities. Thus the study seeks to identify and analyze the globalisation induced issues
and changing governance processes linked to land, water and forest resources on one
hand and their impacts on the rights and ownership of the marginalised (dalits,
adivasis, women, landless) over these resources.
Given the growing debate and contemporary interest in the adivasi areas as arenas for
struggle against globalisation, the study focuses on the tribal dominated central Indian
belt comprising of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and
Jharkhand. The key livelihood issues in these regions are directly dependent and
organically linked with water, land and forest (jal, jungle aur jamin), due to the
presence of abundant natural resources in these areas.
In this study a total of 23 papers attempt to link, explore and examine the unleashing
processes of globalisation since 1991 and their impacts on the lives of the marginalised
people. The study also attempts to examine the impacts of globalisation on Panchayati
Raj Institutions. Efforts are made to document people’s movements and struggles for
control over their natural resources whenever possible and providing support to their
struggles. All the papers are available in English. The translated versions of these
papers are available in Hindi, Marathi and Oriya.
